Prof. Mato Brautović, the main coordinator of the Adria Digital Media Observatory (ADMO) project, appeared in the latest episode of the RTL Detektor podcast, where he spoke about the growing impact of disinformation on society and democratic processes.
Prof. Brautović emphasized that we live in a time marked by an unprecedented amount of information, with a significant share of the content we consume being inaccurate. He pointed out that today’s information flows are decentralized, while users choose the sources and platforms through which they inform themselves, creating their own “information diet”.
Speaking about possible solutions, he warned that regulating the internet, particularly through the licensing of media outlets and authors, does not represent a sustainable response. Such approaches, he noted, carry the risk of being misused for political or ideological purposes, while the internet itself, as an open and dispersed network, is difficult to control centrally. “We have let the genie out of the bottle and can no longer control it,” he said.
Instead of regulation, Brautović emphasized the responsibility of public figures, institutions and media professionals in promoting accurate and verified communication.
In the context of protection against disinformation, he stressed the importance of checking information from multiple sources, especially when it comes to content that may influence important decisions. He also warned about the role of users in spreading content on social media, emphasizing that even simple actions such as liking or sharing can contribute to the spread of inaccurate information through algorithms.
He particularly highlighted that negative information spreads faster than positive information, which has additional implications for public discourse and the perception of reality. In the long term, such patterns can also affect citizens’ trust in democratic processes and institutions.
The ADMO project brings together academic institutions, media outlets and fact-checking organizations from Croatia, Slovenia and France, with the aim of developing tools for identifying disinformation and strengthening media literacy in society.
