The scientific paper “Beyond compliance: How European fact checkers correct their own errors”, authored by Professor Mato Brautović, University Assistant Ivana Grkeš Tošović and Assistant Professor Romana John from the University of Dubrovnik, has been published in the international peer-reviewed journal Harvard Kennedy School Misinformation Review, which operates within the Harvard Kennedy School – Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy.
The paper explores how European fact-checking organisations correct their own errors, focusing on issues of transparency, accountability and trust within the fact-checking ecosystem. The research analyses the practices of organisations that are members of the European Fact-Checking Standards Network (EFCSN) and examines whether existing correction policies represent only formal compliance with professional standards or a genuine commitment to accountability towards the public.
The publication represents an important international recognition of research conducted within the Adria Digital Media Observatory – ADMO project, co-funded by the European Union. It also confirms the importance of ADMO’s work in researching disinformation, information integrity and the digital information environment.
The preliminary results of this research were previously presented by Prof. Mato Brautović, ADMO’s main coordinator, at the international workshop “The Future of Fact-Checking in the Algorithmic Society”, organised by the University of Oxford and Resilient Media EU. His presentation, “Accountability of fact-checkers: An analysis of correction practices within the EFCSN”, encouraged discussion on transparency and accountability in the fact-checking ecosystem at both the European and global levels.
The significance of the publication is further confirmed by the journal’s strong international visibility. The journal is ranked in the Q1 category in the field of social sciences and brings together a broad international scholarly and professional audience.
