Media consumption habits have changed significantly, especially among young people, with social media becoming the main arena for accessing information. In this environment, information reaches users through algorithms rather than active searching, often resulting in the creation of information “bubbles” and limited exposure to different perspectives.
Lucija Dumančić Jovanović, coordinator at Gong, addressed these challenges in the RTL Detektor podcast, emphasizing that algorithms prioritize content that captures and retains attention, rather than content that necessarily contributes to citizens being well informed. One consequence is the growing trend of news avoidance, with as many as 40 percent of citizens in Croatia actively avoiding the news, which further creates space for the spread of disinformation, conspiracy theories and social polarization.
The development of artificial intelligence and deepfake technology poses an additional challenge, as it enables the creation of convincing but false content, making it even more difficult to distinguish between credible and manipulated information.
The importance of strengthening media literacy was also highlighted, particularly through the education system, which currently does not keep pace with changes in the digital environment quickly enough. Scandinavian countries were mentioned as examples of good practice, where media education is integrated into the curriculum from an early age.
In conclusion, the need for a combined approach was emphasized – from strengthening education and supporting quality journalism to encouraging individual responsibility among citizens. Critical thinking, source verification and conscious media consumption are key to countering disinformation.
