Media consumption habits have changed significantly, especially among young people, and social media has become a primary source of information. In this environment, information reaches users through algorithms rather than active searches, often creating information “bubbles” and limiting exposure to different perspectives.

Lucija Dumančić Jovanović, a coordinator at GONG, discussed these challenges on the RTL Detektor podcast. She noted that algorithms prioritise content that holds people’s attention, rather than content that necessarily helps them stay informed. Another concern is the growing tendency to avoid the news: as many as 40 per cent of people in Croatia actively avoid it. This creates more room for disinformation, conspiracy theories and social polarisation.

The development of artificial intelligence and deepfake technology presents a further challenge. It makes it possible to create convincing but false content, making credible information harder to distinguish from manipulated material.

The episode also highlights the importance of strengthening media literacy, particularly through an education system that is currently struggling to keep pace with changes in the digital environment. Scandinavian countries, where media education is integrated into curricula from an early age, are cited as an example of good practice.

In conclusion, the discussion emphasises the need for a combined approach: stronger education, support for quality journalism and individual responsibility. Critical thinking, checking sources and being mindful of the media we consume are essential to countering disinformation.
