Generative AI Use and Disinformation during the Croatian Parliament Elections 2024

This report is part of the research activities carried out within the project “Adria Digital Media Observatory” funded by the Digital Europe
Programme. The aim was to identify use of Generative AI in production of disinformation that was shared on social media during campaign for the Croatian Parliament Elections 2024.
Key findings:
- Detected presence of generative AI disinformation during the Croatian parliamentary elections 2024,
- Main platforms for dissemination were TikTok and X,
- Generative AI disinformation targeted the Croatian political elite and had low to high user activity,
- The disinformation analyzed was created with moderate technical sophistication,

This study examines how Croatian political actors communicated on Facebook during the 2024 European Parliament election campaign, with a focus on topics that are often subject to disinformation and populist framing: immigration, the war in Ukraine and the European Union. Based on a dataset of 546 Facebook posts published by parties that won seats in the European Parliament - HDZ, SDP, the Homeland Movement and Možemo! - as well as their prominent candidates, the analysis explores narrative patterns and electoral instrumentalization of these topics.
